The man who led the restoration of Britain’s first mosque in Liverpool has died – just two weeks after achieving his dream.
Dr Mohammad Akbar Ali, 92, set up the Abdullah Quilliam Society in 1997, with the intention of restoring the Grade II listed building at Brougham Terrace off West Derby Road, Kensington to its former glory.
Work began on the estimated £3m project in 2009 and the mosque re-opened at the end of last month.
The Abdullah Quilliam Heritage Centre, recognised as the birthplace of Islam in Britain, now includes the restored mosque, a new mosque, courtyard, museum, art gallery, learning centre for interfaith work, library and cafe. [Read more…]
